What Are Overages?
Each plan includes a monthly allocation of AI tokens. If you use more tokens than your plan includes in a billing period, the additional usage is called an overage.
Overages are a pay-as-you-go safety net — they ensure you’re never cut off from the AI assistant mid-conversation, even if you’ve exhausted your monthly allocation.
Good to know: Overage billing only applies to AI tokens. Other resources (storage, projects, seats) have hard limits that require an upgrade or add-on to expand.
How Overage Billing Works
- You use your included tokens — Normal usage within your plan’s allocation is covered by your monthly subscription
- You exceed your allocation — Once you pass 100% of your included tokens, overage metering begins
- Usage is tracked — Every additional token is metered and recorded
- Billed at period end — Overage charges are calculated and added to your next invoice
Overage Pricing
Overage tokens are billed per 1,000 tokens at a rate set by your plan. The exact rate is shown on your billing page.
Example:
If your plan includes 5M tokens and you use 6.2M tokens in a month, that’s 1.2M overage tokens. At a rate of $X per 1,000 tokens, the overage charge would be added to your next invoice.
Plan Overage Support
Not all plans support overages. Check your plan details in Settings → Billing to see if overage billing is enabled for your account.
- Plans with overage enabled — You can continue using AI beyond your allocation; extra usage is billed at the overage rate
- Plans without overage — AI usage may be limited or paused once you reach your allocation until the next billing period
Tracking Your Overages
You can monitor overage usage in real-time:
- Go to Settings → Usage
- The AI Tokens section shows if you’re in overage territory (over 100%)
- Estimated overage cost is displayed when applicable
Avoiding Unexpected Overages
- Monitor your usage dashboard — Check the Usage page regularly to see where you stand
- Watch for warning alerts — Framework warns you at 80% and 95% usage
- Upgrade if needed — If you consistently exceed your allocation, upgrading to a higher plan may be more cost-effective than paying overage rates
- Start new conversations wisely — Long conversation threads use more tokens. Starting fresh conversations when changing topics helps manage token usage
- Purchase AI token add-ons — Increase your base allocation with add-ons for a predictable monthly cost
← Usage & Limits Payment Methods →Tip: If you’re approaching your token limit mid-month, consider whether an upgrade or add-on would be more economical than overage charges. Check the pricing on your billing page to compare.
