Framework’s AI has two operating modes that control what it can do: Plan Mode and Act Mode. You can switch between them at any time during a conversation.
Plan Mode (Default)
Plan Mode is focused on research and analysis. The AI can:
- Search your documents.
- Read document content.
- Answer questions with citations.
- Summarize information.
- Compare documents and cross-reference.
This is the default mode and the right choice for most questions.
Act Mode
Act Mode allows the AI to create and edit content. In addition to everything Plan Mode does, the AI can also:
- Create new project notes.
- Edit existing notes.
- Generate summaries and save them as notes.
Use Act Mode when you want the AI to produce something — like drafting a summary of spec changes, compiling a list of requirements, or creating meeting prep notes.
Switching Modes
- Look for the mode selector at the bottom of the chat input area.
- Click it to open the mode dropdown.
- Select Plan Mode (brain icon) or Act Mode (lightning bolt icon).
The mode applies to all subsequent messages in the conversation until you change it again.
When to Use Each Mode
| Use Case | Mode |
|---|---|
| Finding a specification requirement | Plan |
| Comparing two documents | Plan |
| Summarizing a section | Plan |
| Creating a meeting prep note | Act |
| Drafting a list of action items | Act |
| Generating a comparison table as a note | Act |
Tip: Start in Plan Mode to research and understand the information, then switch to Act Mode when you’re ready to produce a deliverable.
